Covering an area of 30,000 square meters, Shanghai General Long Distance Bus Station (上海长途汽车客运总站) is the largest bus terminal of the city. It locates at No. 1666, Zhongxing Road, Zhabei District (闸北区中兴路1666号), on the north square of Shanghai Railway Station.
The bus station opens 5:00 am to 10:00 pm Monday to Sunday.
Travelers can call 0086-21-66050000 to make telephone inquiry or call 0086-21-66299119 to make phone complaint. Please note, the operator speaks Chinese only.

How to Get there

  • 🚇 Best way to travel to Shanghai General Long Distance Bus Station is to by the metro. Passengers can take Shanghai Metro Line 1, Line 3 or Line 4 and alight at the metro station of Shanghai Railway Station and walk from No. 6 exit to Shanghai General Bus Station in about 8 minutes.
  • 🚌 Bus routes 117,106, 310, 515, 306, 942, 929, 912, 962, 817, 823, 305, 928, 78, 140, 859 and 963 stop at the North Square (北广场) of Shanghai Railway Station.
  • 🚌 Bus routes 98, 104, 584, 802, 837, 930, 64, 109, 234, 113, 927, 941 and airport bus line 5 stop at the South Square(南广场) of Shanghai Railway Station.

Shanghai General Long Distance Bus Station has a market share of approximate 42% in terms of road passenger transportation. It operates 378 bus routes enabling you to travel to more than 130 prefecture level cities and 360 counties in 23 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.
On normal days, it has more than 1,200 daily bus departures transporting around 40,000 passengers. During the holidays and the Spring Festival Transportation Seasons, with more visitors coming here, it reaches full capacity to send more than 2,000 buses with nearly 80,000 passengers just in one day.
Even though more people have opted to high speed trains in the neighbouring Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai General Long Distance is still very popular for short distance travel. It's also the first choice to travel for Changshu, Zhangjiagang, Nantong, Jiande, Xin'anjiang, Qidong, Rugao and etc as the railway has not reached to these places yet.

Tickets and Reservation

Shanghai General Long Distance Bus Station sells tickets both online and offline.
For people who want to purchase tickets directly from the bus station, it has 24 ticket windows on both underground floor and ground floor. Bus, flight and train tickets are all sold under real-name system in China and international travelers can submit their passports and pay Renminbi cash to purchase bus tickets here. Ticket windows on the underground floor are less busy and you are advised to go there to purchase or reserve tickets to save time.
On the ground floor, it has a window that sells tickets 24 hours a day.
FYR, the bus station also has automatic ticket vending machines, but they don't work for international travelers as they can't read your passport information to sell tickets to you.

Bus Boarding Procedures Guide

Shanghai General Long Distance Bus Station has waiting areas on ground floor and the 2nd floor. In general, the ground floor waiting area is for short distance travel and waiting area on the 2nd floor is for medium to long distance travel. Waiting area on the ground floor has 1 to 8 ticket gates and waiting area on the 2nd floor has 9 to 24 ticket gates. Please go to correspongding gate which is printed on your paper tickets to check in.
Passengers are advised to get to the gate area 10 to 15 minutes prior to departure to make sure.
